🛜 Is a new internet provider coming?
February 5, 2024
Happy Monday, however oxymoronic that is. As you might’ve heard, there’s a bowl game in town this coming weekend, one said to be super. Question: Do you know of any good, off-Strip watch parties, events, or bar scenes worth pointing your fellow readers to? (There’s one at the stadium tonight!) Email us the deets:

🏖️ Beachy Teacher Recruiting Trips Probed
Does this perhaps throw Superintendent Jesus Jara’s abrupt resignation in a new light? Sources say state and federal education officials are investigating a pair of costly recruiting trips that saw CCSD staffers go to Miami and Hawaii in search of new teachers. Some of those expenses were paid for by federal pandemic-relief funds. The district says the feds signed off on the trips. The School Board will consider Jara’s departure on Wednesday. [Review-Journal]
- Similarly, the teachers union is suggesting that Jara’s swift departure might be about its legal action against the district related to a disparaging social media post allegedly put up by Jara. Today is the deadline for CCSD to turn over Jara’s social media records. [Nevada Independent]
- Several education unions are also against a measure on Wednesday’s agenda that would appoint Jara’s second-in-command to replace him, perhaps permanently, without a national search.
- Did our pod crew tackle a lot of this in Friday’s news roundup? You know it! [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🛜 More Internet?!
Tomorrow, Google Fiber will go before the Clark County Commission, seeking approval to begin the process of bringing another high-speed internet service to a valley that needs it. [Review-Journal]

💰 Hendo Spends Big on Cops, Fire
Out in Henderson, fire and police personnel comprise half of the city’s payroll. Some 47% of the city’s workforce pulls in six figures, including a police lieutenant who earns $341,000. I can tell you from experience that one class of employee they’re not paying enough of is road construction workers. [Review-Journal]

Where Is It?

Hard to know where to begin describing this tableau — so many denominations of commemorative kitsch here, from Revolutionary War bric-a-brac to, dead center, a bobblehead of former mayor Oscar Goodman as a possibly gin-soaked yankee doodle dandy.
Is this …
- Part of the decor at the Original Omelete House at Charleston and Rancho?
- Behind the bar at the Triple George power-lunch spot on Third Street?
- A permanent display in the famous "Pawn Stars" Gold & Silver Pawn Shop?
- In one of the restored homes at the Clark County Museum on Boulder Highway?

What to Do This February in Las Vegas
February is an intermittently dreary month, as Mother Nature does her annual should-I-stay-or-should-I-go tapdance. But there’s plenty you can do to brighten the month, and we’re not just talking about the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day. Heather Collins, a radio personality from 94.1-FM, and executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson join the podcast to fill you in. Dayvid Figler hosts.
Second to last today, where is that kitsch collection pictured above? The answer is 1., in the Original Omelet House. (While you’re there, try the chile verde omelet and thank me later.)
Lastly today, the Las Vegas Weekly’s Best of Vegas ballot is out, and they’ve finally included a Best Podcast category. 🗳️ You know what to do!
