🌨️ It was an avalanche — of relief!
February 6, 2024
Good morning, and quick heads up, it’s Presidential Preference Primary Tuesday for all who observe. 🗳️ If you’ve long wanted to download a PDF of Clark County voting locations, now’s your chance. And for those of you still wondering why Donald Trump isn’t on the Republican ballot, have we got a podcast episode for you:

What's CITY Talking About?
🌨️ Avalanche Victims Marked Safe!
Four people reported as missing after an avalanche at Lee Canyon on Monday were not, in fact, actually missing, officials now say. This brief drama followed almost 11 inches of snowfall in the previous 24 hours; expect roads on the mountain to be closed today and possibly tomorrow. [Review-Journal]
🎒 Title 1 Schools Get More Newbie Teachers
A first-of-its-kind analysis using previously unavailable data shows that Nevada’s Title 1 schools (those with more lower-income students) generally have less-experienced teachers — a disparity of 20% overall. This is true across the state but especially acute in Clark County. In part that’s because Title 1 schools typically have more openings, meaning more new teachers get hired — many of whom haven’t had a chance to master classroom management or teaching styles. [Nevada Independent]
🔐 I’m Sure They’d Tell Us, Right?
According to a document assembled by local and federal authorities and obtained by ABC News, there have been no credible threats against the Super Bowl this year. But, we’re told, officials are keeping an eye on motorcycle gangs. [KTNV]
🪧 Strike Those Strikes!
- If you were concerned about a potential bus strike this pre-Super Bowl week, relax: The transit union and the contractor that operates the valley’s CAT buses have tentatively agreed on a contract. [Review-Journal]
- The Culinary Union has reached agreements with major downtown properties, thereby averting the strike that some skeptics insist was never going to occur anyway. There’s still one off-Strip holdout: Virgin Hotel. [KVVU]
- In our podcast talk with Culinary honcho Ted Pappageorge, he claps back at those who claim these negotiations are all empty theater. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
⚖️ School Attack Prompts Lawsuit
A violent attack on one student by another in a CCSD classroom two years ago is the subject of a recently filed lawsuit. It claims the district "had every ability to prevent this attack from happening, but failed to do so." [KTNV]

Primary vs Caucus: Answers to Your Questions
Today is the presidential primary for both parties. As you may have seen, there’s been some confusion on the GOP side vis-a-vis the difference between today’s voting (operated by the state) and the caucus two days hence (operated by the party). Tabitha Mueller of The Nevada Independent joins co-host Dayvid Figler to straighten it all out.
That’s it for today. See you tomorrow!
