🤔 School Board to decide Jara’s fate tonight

February 7, 2024

It’s another manic Wednesday. Brace yourself!

What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ Haley Stumbles in Trumpless Primary

GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley earned about 33% of the statewide vote in Tuesday’s presidential preference primary — roughly half of the 60% pulled in by “none of these candidates.” (The latter option is unique to Nevada's ballots, by the way.) Donald Trump wasn’t on the primary ballot; he’s expected to sweep tomorrow’s GOP caucus. No surprises on the Democratic side: President Biden won 90%. But in a bit of a protest vote, “none of these candidates” clocked in at a robust 5.7%. [Nevada Independent]

❗ Watch Jara’s Future Be Decided

Tonight, the Clark County School Board is scheduled to discuss the resignation of Superintendent Jesus Jara, as well as the possibility of replacing him with his deputy. You can watch on the district’s home page, or on its YouTube channel.

⚾ A Haze of A’s

Mayor Carolyn Goodman gave a podcast interview in which she suggested that the A’s might really want to stay in Oakland, which she thought might be a good idea. Her sentiment appeared to be based on the team’s rejection of Cashman Center as a possible stadium site. In a later statement she cooled her spicy take, calling the possible relocation of the A’s “a milestone in my and former Mayor Oscar Goodman’s pursuit of sports teams for Las Vegas.” OK! [KSNV]

  • Educators are taking a second run at curtailing public funding for the A’s field; a PAC tied to the Nevada State Education Association has filed a lawsuit claiming the funding violates the state constitution. [Nevada Independent]

🏈 Super Bowl Lowdown

How did Las Vegas land the Super Bowl? What does it mean for this city to host it? And how do locals feel about another major sporting event? Bryan Salmond, the main sports anchor for KSNV Channel 3, explains. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

✍️ Readers Always Write!

🚫 🏈 What if you DON’T want to watch the big game?!

“Here's a little reader service: My three favorite bars that will absolutely NOT have the Super Bowl screening. Oddly enough, they are all tiki-themed, or tiki-adjacent: Frankie's Tiki Room, Red Dwarf, and Golden Tiki. All are perfect for those who want an escape from the seven-layer-dip-and-wing hangover, the loud play-by-play, the sad uncle who made the wrong bet — all of it! — and just quietly disappear into a mai tai.” (James P. Reza)

🚌 In a recent item about the potential transit strike, I referred to “CAT buses.” My lack of bus experience was showing:

“It’s been years since they’ve been called the CAT buses. … The only people not calling them RTC buses are people who do not use transit.” (Jecia H.)

🛜 Thousands of Las Vegans agree with this:

“I hope Google Fiber gets approved. Cox Communication needs to get knocked down a little bit!” (Lisa W.)

What Does the Super Bowl Mean to Las Vegas?

Many millions of dollars, for one thing. But what else? Sportscaster Bryan Salmond of KSNV Channel 3 joins the pod to lay out for co-host Sarah Lohman some of the major local effects of the big game.

That’s it for today. See you tomorrow.
