🚨 Henderson police coverup alleged

February 16, 2024

Before we savor this nice Friday, a quick reminder about Monday: It’s Presidents Day, which we here at City Cast will observe, possibly by wearing stovepipe hats. So there’ll be no fresh newsletter or podcast that day. We’ll be back in your inbox and earbuds on Tuesday — with Rob Kachelriess taking my place!

What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 What’s Happening in Henderson?

An alleged coverup of an officer-involved DUI by Henderson police is raising questions about the department’s culture and corruption. According to an internal report obtained by the Review-Journal, responding officers failed to properly report and handle a one-car crash involving a coworker in 2021. The previous police administration wanted to terminate several officers involved — but current chief Hollie Chadwick reversed that finding. [Review-Journal]

🔫 Something Wick This Way Comes

Later this year, Area15 will debut The John Wick Experience, an (buzzword alert!) immersive experience based on the high-body-count movie franchise. Visitors will “navigate a high stakes adventure as well as visit a themed bar and retail shop” based on the films’ “fantastical underworld.” You’ll have to bring your own Keanu Reeves. 😨 LGBTQ+ Youth Feel Unsafe

Nearly 80% of the state’s students who identify as LGBTQ+ say they face discrimination in schools, according to a new report. “More than three-fifths of those surveyed reported being bullied in the last six months.” [Nevada Current]

🤔 Joe Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost Guns

A new report suggests that both as a candidate and as governor, Joe Lombardo has greatly downplayed the extent that “ghost guns” — untraceable firearms assembled by the owner — are a law-enforcement issue. (Last year he vetoed a bill that would’ve banned their components.) [Nevada Independent]

Big Game, Big Bucks + Downtown Housing Projects + Sin City Scams

Naturally the Super Bowl keynotes this week’s Friday news roundup, as our merry band of podcasters looks at the event’s economic impacts large and small. Meanwhile, downtown, the different receptions given to two proposed housing projects might say something about our city. For dessert, there’s a lively chat about Vegas’ biggest scams. Nevada Current reporter Michael Lyle joins co-hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler.

A parting note: My deepest thanks to every reader who ever sent a comment or complaint, dropped us a photo, shared a recommendation, or posted on social media about City Cast — that interaction was truly one of the finest parts of this job. Keep it up with the new guy!
