🏈 Former Raider tackles DUI deal
February 22, 2024
Happy Thursday! It’s been a wet week in Las Vegas and that usually adds up to extra snow on Mt. Charleston. If you plan to visit this weekend, follow the winter season guidelines. It’s not uncommon for those without reservations to be turned away as early as 9 a.m. on busy days and the use of Uber or Lyft is probably not in the best interest of you or your driver. Be safe, behave yourself, and send us your photos!

What's CITY Talking About?

🏈 Lynch Avoids Trial
Former NFL star Marshawn Lynch struck a deal with Las Vegas prosecutors about an hour before his DUI trial was set to begin. As long as he doesn’t fumble community service, classes, and fines, the charge will be reduced to reckless driving with time served. Police arrested Lynch on suspicion of DUI in 2022 after the running back was found asleep behind the wheel of a parked car with the door open. According to the report, Lynch wouldn’t fess up to drinking or drugs, but did admit he stole the car. [KSNV]
🏆 Super Bowl vs. Taylor Swift
NFL fans are more likely to splurge on vacation rentals in Las Vegas than Taylor Swift fans. (And yes, you know why we’re comparing the two.) AirDNA says the recent Super Bowl between the Chiefs and 49ers at Allegiant Stadium led to an impact of $5.73 million on short-term rentals in the Vegas market. By comparison, Taylor Swift’s pair of 2023 shows at the same stadium generated $1.6 million for Airbnb and similar accommodations. In other words, football’s biggest game was even better than the Eras Tour for the local economy, which includes about 15,500 short-term rentals in addition to 156,100 hotel rooms. 💸 A New Era for Nevada Unemployment Begins
The first phase of Nevada’s new unemployment insurance system launched this week, mostly affecting employers. Those filing claims won’t notice changes for at least 18 months. The system was overwhelmed after a spike in claims during the pandemic with dated technology described as “overly complex” and “costly” by an external review. The solution: a $72 million modernization project, which doesn’t sound complex and costly at all. [Nevada Independent]
