🚥 Is Vegas ready for traffic ticket cameras?
February 29, 2024
Happy Thursday! Adele may have postponed her Caesars Palace shows, but it’s still a busy weekend ahead. You’ve got NASCAR, U2 wrapping up their Sphere residency, and the first lady in town. This kind of stuff only makes traffic worse, but we’re used to it by now, aren’t we?

What's CITY Talking About?

🔴 Red Light District
The debate is heating up again over the idea of red light ticket cameras in Las Vegas. Sheriff Kevin McMahill pushed hard for them during Monday’s State of the Department address, but only on a limited basis. (Then again, does Las Vegas do anything on a limited basis?) Incidents like running a red light could be recorded with a ticket mailed to the driver following a review by a real-life human being. Laws would need to change for this to move forward, but safety advocates are already on board. [KSNV]
- Semi-related: Henderson police issued more than 600 citations for dangerous driving in just two weeks. [KTNV]
💅 Nail Salon Fight Erupts Over Bathroom
The search continues for suspects in a beatdown of a nail salon owner that was caught on camera east of the Strip. It started when a woman asked to use the restroom. The owner said no. The customer threw a plant. Then the woman returned with three others accused of attacking the owner. Hard to believe this began over a bathroom, but here we are.
- Crime continues to creep up. On the other side of the Strip, Metro launched a new anti-crime team in response to escalating theft in Chinatown. [KVVU]
- It’s enough to make you wonder if Las Vegas is a cesspool of crime. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🚁 News Chopper Grounded
The days of TV news helicopters are over in Las Vegas. The last holdout, KSNV News3, has grounded its Sky 3 chopper, citing an expense the station “couldn’t really justify,” ending a 34-year legacy. No word on if the decision is related to the departure of traffic reporter Kelly Curran, whose final day is today before joining Sacramento’s NBC affiliate. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
