🚧 Deadly construction sites: a Vegas story
March 1, 2024
Howdy, Vegas! I’m elated to see so many others excited about Los Bukis’ Vegas residency this year — the first Spanish language residency on the Strip. Their music is part of the soundtrack of my childhood, particularly Saturday mornings when my mom would clean the house with the radio turned up to 11. Perhaps I’ll bring my own dustpan to the show. 🧹

What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Man Who Attacked Judge Pleads Not Guilty
Deobra Redden, who launched himself at a Las Vegas judge during a sentencing hearing last month, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to attempted murder and related charges. His attorney clarified the plea during an arraignment in Clark County District Court, stating it was based on Redden’s mental state at the time of the incident. [KSNV]
✏️ Nevada’s Education Investment: High Stakes, Low Grades
Nevada’s record $2.6 billion investment into public education has stirred debate over its impact as an audit revealed stagnant student achievement levels. Gov. Joe Lombardo expressed concerns about the effectiveness of current spending and said he plans on proposing new legislation to address concerns, namely making it easier to remove a school superintendent and hand the reins to the state. 🍽️ Deluxe Dining, But Make it Casino-Less
Development company Hukl Investments unveiled plans for Skyline, a three-story building in southwest Las Vegas set to redefine upscale dining away from the casino scene. The Clark County Planning Commission approved the proposal for the 72,000-square-foot establishment, featuring a high-end steakhouse alongside a cafe, wine cellar, speakeasy, and other amenities. Construction is slated to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in late 2025 or early 2026. [Las Vegas Journal-Review]

Tesla Tunnels Safety Meltdown, Henderson Traffic Crackdown, and Big Win for Peppermill
Construction workers for the Vegas Loop (unofficially the Tesla Tunnels) filed complaints with the over safety concerns that include working in sludge with harmful accelerants and the lack of proper safety equipment. OSHA’s investigation was contested by the company saying there is insufficient evidence. In another part of the Valley, Henderson police issued 600+ speeding tickets in just two weeks in an effort to make the streets safer. Also, the beloved Peppermill wins a prestigious food award from James Beard. Hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler are joined by City Cast Las Vegas executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson to explain the big impacts on our city.

That’s all for this week.
