🥴 Scorpion stings testicles of Vegas tourist

March 6, 2024

Hello everyone! Today’s newsletter has everything Las Vegas loves: sports, events, lawsuits, and desert wildlife — believe it or not, those last two actually go together. So let’s not waste any time and get crackin’ 🥜

What's CITY Talking About?

🦂 Woke Up With a Monster

A Las Vegas tourist claims he was stung by a scorpion on his testicles while asleep at the Venetian. (Admit it, you were expecting a different resort.) The victim filed a report, presented photo evidence of the scorpion in his underwear, and is considering legal action. He compared the pain to being stabbed by “sharp glass,” which sounds like it stung worse than the resort fee. [KLAS]

📉 Southwest Gas Lowers Rates

Gas prices are so bad, people have been protesting in the streets. Must’ve worked. Southwest Gas filed a quarterly rate adjustment that will decrease bills nearly 10% in April for those living in Southern Nevada – just in time for us to turn down the heat. If you still need a reason to be mad, Northern Nevada gets a 13% decrease. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🏁 F1 is Ready to Make Nice

F1 is finally affordable! Kinda. Tickets go on sale for this year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix on March 25 and in response to widespread contempt, Formula 1 is giving Nevada locals their own presale on March 22. Single-day tickets start at $150 for standing room access and viewing platforms on a first-come, first-serve basis 🤔 Ticket packages jump like Michael Jordan from there. [KVVU]

🏀 Aces Shooting to Sell Out Season

The Las Vegas Aces are on pace to become the first franchise in WNBA to sell out an entire regular season. The two-time defending champs have sold more than 8,500 season ticket memberships for 2024 already. The first game is May 14 at the Michelob Ultra Arena against the Phoenix Mercury. [KSNV]

  • This just tells me Las Vegas doesn’t really need an NBA team after all. We’re good. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

I want to support local voices.

— Patricia B.

Listening to your podcast on a stressful drive home each day brings me a lot of laughter and solace, plus I learn so much about my community. Thanks for your great storytelling.

— Jennifer K.

I love the banter, the local updates, and the GREAT list of things for locals to do!

— Starr H.

Where's the Beef?

While we wait for the new Skyline steakhouse to show up, a few of you shared some current favorites for ordering a hunk of beef in Vegas.

Herbs and Rye. Hands down.

— Rick B.

The Golden Steer … It has great food, delicious martinis, and I love the tableside experience.

— Annette W.

T-Bones at Red Rock.

— Mary Denise L.

I have to go with the new Bistecca Italian Steakhouse at Tuscany Suites & Casino.

— Kimiko P.

Used to be The Barrymore. But now it's Piero's.

— Bob G.

Actually, none since I am a vegetarian. However, if I ate meat again, I would say the Golden Steer because of its old Las Vegas vibe and history.

— Rosa M.

And Today in Weird Press Releases

  • 2024’s Best States for Animal Lawn Mowing (Nevada is the 8th worst, apparently)
  • Nevada Is the 7th Best State to Be Rich from a Tax Perspective
  • Las Vegas Ranks in the Top 4% of Cities with the Worst Money-Management Skills

Those last two feel related somehow, but also contradictory 🤔

Could Toxic Sludge Derail the Tesla Tunnels?

Elon Musk’s Vegas Loop of underground Tesla tunnels was designed to be a futuristic form of public transportation to link the Strip together, but is now facing fallout over worker complaints and toxic sludge 🤮 City Cast Las Vegas Co-Host Dayvid Figler discusses the eye-watering OSHA investigation with Jessica Matthews, a journalist who wrote about the investigation in Fortune after interviewing more than 10 former Boring Company employees.

The Today Show took a break from daily Taylor Swift coverage to run a story on the original Peter Luger Steak House in New York City. It’ll give you a quick primer on why the Vegas version at Caesars Palace was so anticipated last year.
