☀️ Why Nevada might drop daylight saving time

March 12, 2024

I don’t know about you, but I still haven’t adjusted to daylight saving time this week. It’s like I’m waking up early for a flight every morning.

I feel like this right now…

What's CITY Talking About?

🕝 Can Nevada Drop Daylight Saving Time?

Neighboring Arizona was smart enough to stop switching clocks, so why don’t we? Bills to drop Daylight Saving Time have floated before in Nevada, but there’s a feeling it only makes sense if California does it too, since there is so much traffic between the two states. Well, guess what? The Golden State is considering two different bills to lock in a permanent switch to standard time, which if passed, would almost surely prompt Nevada to do the same 🤞 [KTNV]

🐴 Wildlife Commission Not Big on Wildlife

Critics say the Nevada Wildlife Commission is out of balance, stacked with interests that favor ranchers and hunters over animals. The commission won’t consider a ban on coyote killing contests, but just approved a plan to “remove” 75% of wild horses and burros from public land. [Nevada Current]

🫦 ‘Trained Sniper’ Spends Three Days at a Strip Club

Maybe four. A man was arrested at the Spearmint Rhino on a parole violation and responded by threatening to kill police, claiming to be a trained sniper. Metro says he spent “three or four” days at the strip club. I didn’t know you could do that 🤔 I mean, the food’s pretty good, but have you seen those ATM fees? [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🚨 City Shuts Down Hotel

Well, the Travelers Bed & Breakfast anyway, which sits in that uncomfortable part of Downtown north of the Strip on Las Vegas Boulevard. It’s not a “bed and breakfast” like you’d find in Nantucket or a Hallmark Christmas movie, but more like an extended stay or hostel. Residents say they got the boot without 24-hour notice and now the city’s looking to permanently close it due to “stabbings, homicides, and all kinds of issues,” according to crime-fighting lawyer, food critic, and friend of the pod John Curtas. The Yellow Billed Loon Runs Las Vegas

Forget everything else. The emergence of a rare yellow billed loon at the Bellagio fountains was the biggest story of this past week. Even John Oliver mentioned it over the weekend.

🦆 We received a nice poem about the little guy from a reader. I totally love this.

Tender ducky, soft and brown,

Yellow-billed and speckled down

descends into a shallow lake

and doesn't ponder if it's fake,

The fountain stops and people gather

to hear the ducky's loony laughter.

Across the world, people cheer

for a vagrant duck that visits here.

Soon enough, he flies away.

He knows that duckies aren't to stay.

And all the city bids good luck

to tender migratory duck.

🌳 Readers also weighed in on our story about the Charleston Heights neighborhood.

“Great short snippet on Charleston Heights but someone forgot to mention Snappys burger joint with drive-up theater!!!!!”

— Elizabeth P.

Charleston Heights Arts Center actually opened in 1978. All the land to the west of it was still desert at the time!

— Karen M.

😠 And my obsessive addiction to weeding.

“Just a quick note on how much I loved the ‘War on Weeds’ segment. I totally saw myself in your comments, including the neighbors’ yard scanning. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only weed obsessed person here!”

— Mary P.

Is SeaQuest Hiding an Ugly Truth?

SeaQuest is facing accusations of animal abuse and the stories are truly horrific, ranging from deadly enclosures to reports of starvation and other examples I don’t even want to type out. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler discusses the matter with investigative journalist Darcy Spears of KTNV 13 Action News, who’s been following the developments closely as protests continue in Las Vegas.

A reminder… It's Spring Break in Clark County. Beware of children in the wild.
