What's CITY Talking About?

🕵️ LVCVA ‘More Involved’ as Vegas Loop Expands
The LVCVA isn’t just funding Elon Musk’s underground Vegas Loop Tesla tunnel, it’s promising to be more involved to “help guide” the project and “make sure that it is done correctly.” That’s according to CEO Steve Hill, who says the LVCVA was aware of OSHA workplace complaints in the tunnel since last summer and met with Musk’s Boring Company in August to get on the same page. [Fortune]
- The complaints, which include accusations of “toxic sludge,” equipment collapsing, and worker injuries, surfaced just weeks ago. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
- The project is barely slowing down as Clark County approves a Vegas Loop extension between the Thomas & Mack Center and Harry Reid International Airport. [Casino.org]
🚦 Red Light, Green Light
Beware of running red lights in Henderson. Police are now using LED indicator beams at 12 intersections. The technology allows an officer to see when a light turns red from behind a traffic light, making it easier to spot and catch violators. [KVVU]
🛒 Manager Steals $142K from Smith’s
“Skimming off the top” is an old tradition in Las Vegas. There’s even an exhibit about it at the Mob Museum. But this time around, it happened at the Smith’s at Maryland Pkwy and Sahara. A customer service manager is accused of stealing a total $142,000 from the supermarket over 77 days by pocketing cash removed from self-service kiosks. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- You may have noticed: Stores like Walmart and Target have been limiting the use of self-service checkouts over theft concerns, although those worries are more about customers than employees 🫣
💲 Medicaid to Help House the Homeless
In a new pilot program, Nevada Medicaid now has federal funds to cover housing and supportive services for applicants who identify as homeless. That’s about 20,300 of the nearly 1 in 3 Nevadans covered under Medicaid. [Nevada Current]

Today on City Cast
New York, Chicago, and Detroit all have their own styles of pizza, but what about Las Vegas? Scott Weiner of Scott’s Pizza Tours talks about the local pizza scene with City Cast Las Vegas co-host Sarah Lohman ahead of next week's International Pizza Expo.

😿 In sad, but not surprising news, one of the last two remaining stores at the Primm Mall, a Michael Kors outlet, is planning to close later this month, leaving the shopping center on the verge of abandonment. You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.
Farewell Mr. Kors,
Rob Kachelriess
