📱 Vegas mom sues Snapchat
March 18, 2024
☀️ Happy Monday! Hope you didn’t drink too much green beer over the weekend ☘️ If so, it’s time to nurse that St. Patrick’s Day hangover and face the week.

What's CITY Talking About?
📵 Vegas Mom Sues Snapchat
A Vegas mother is suing the owner of Snapchat after her 20-year-old daughter fatally overdosed on drugs purchased through a dealer on the social media network. The drugs were believed to be Xanax or Oxycodone but turned out to be 100% fentanyl. Snapchat’s biggest selling point – temporary communication with minimal evidence - could become its greatest liability in the case. [KLAS]
🏠 More than 30,000 Evicted in 2023
Las Vegas and Henderson saw a combined 30,230 evictions in 2023 with empty units proving to be attractive for squatters. About 70 cases pass through eviction court daily and 90 percent of those cases are granted eviction. The new year is already on pace to surpass 2023 with more than 5,600 evictions so far. [KVVU]
- We saw this coming with a tsunami of evictions around this time last year. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
👷 Tropicana Inches Towards Destruction
As the Tropicana prepares to shut its doors for good in April, heavy equipment is moving on site with excavators ready to handle post-closure trash and debris. Demolition plans have yet to be filed with Clark County. Bally’s, which operates the casino, is now weighing a corporate takeover bid after failing to fully cough up the cash for a Chicago hotel and casino. The Oakland A’s still want the site to be the home of their new baseball stadium, but are open to playing some official games at the Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin before their new home is ready. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- Meanwhile, the renderings for the A’s stadium have given Las Vegas something to talk about 🧐 [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🍔 McDonald’s Handicaps the Handicapped
There’s something strange in the parking lot of a new McDonald’s in Skye Canyon. Parking spaces for handicapped drivers are farther away from the fast-food restaurant than spaces for those picking up mobile orders 🤔 [KTNV]

Where Is It?

B. A shelf from an exhibit on Las Vegas during the Prohibition era at the Springs Preserve.
C. Some old junk in the garage of my parents’ house in Pahrump.

What Happened to the Bellagio Loon?
A yellow-billed loon became a worldwide sensation by shutting down the Bellagio fountains. The endangered bird was rescued and is now safe, but what does the whole episode say about local capabilities to handle rare birds safely? City Cast Las Vegas co-host Sarah Lohman talks to Alex Harper of the Red Rock Audubon Society in Las Vegas about the looney adventure and how often rare birds show up in Nevada.

New Member Shoutout
Cynthia Watson joined our membership program at the Residency level.
Here’s what they love the most about our city: "The quirky nature of Las Vegas is my favorite thing about this jewel in the desert, we do not now or ever fall into the traditional boring ways of other communities. Being raised in our sweet little village is an education beyond compare. Hated as a youth and celebrated as an adult."

So about that photo… The answer is D. Both The Lock and Cabinet of Curiosities have all sorts of nicknacks and oddities that line the walls. Some even have descriptions that can be pulled up on your phone with a QR code. Unfortunately, there isn’t any sort of Charlie Chaplin exhibit at UNLV and no, my parents don’t really live in Pahrump.
