🚒 Fire truck theft ends in crash
April 18, 2024
🎶 The release of a new Taylor Swift album is almost like a national holiday at this point. Now, Swifties can feel seen with a “Tortured Poets Department” launch party inside Illuminarium tomorrow with immersive video walls, themed drinks, and all the T. Swizzle you can handle. Have fun!

What's CITY Talking About?
🚒 Stolen Fire Truck Joyride
Now, if you saw a fire truck just sitting there, you’d go ahead and take it, right? Somebody did just that, hopping behind the wheel of a Las Vegas Fire & Rescue ambulance while its crew was answering an emergency call. The final result? An hour-long chase, crash, and arrest. And that wasn’t even the only big auto theft and crash yesterday. [KSNV]
🎨 Arts District Crime Wave
D E Thai Kitchen is the latest business in the Downtown Arts District to deal with burglary and vandalism. The culprit broke a window with a rock and made off with a cash register filled with little more than a hundred bucks. Tacotarian and Dig It! Coffee also saw similar break-ins in recent weeks. [KSNV]
🛩️ Big Planes, Big Runways
Clark County is looking to expand and widen runways at the North Las Vegas Airport and Henderson Executive Airport. The move would accommodate larger aircraft, easing the burden on Harry Reid International Airport (where your TSA wait will be exactly the same). [Review-Journal]

Desert Moon: Building Better Mushrooms in Las Vegas

Enrique Gonzalez and Eva-Sara Luna founded Desert Moon Mushrooms in 2020 during a bout of pandemic boredom.
The duo spent years in a trial-and-error process, figuring out the best ways to grow mushrooms on substrate (the substance mushrooms grow on). Desert Moon has unlocked the code, beginning with a personal “library” of more than 60 different mushroom mycelium to inoculate into an oak substrate.
From there, Desert Moon carefully controls growth to create beautiful, delicious, prized mushrooms, which are now inside kitchens at every major Strip property.
Desert Moon brings mushrooms to the table that are so varied in texture and color — like crunchy, nutty “pretzel caps” or stunning gold, pink, and blue oyster mushrooms — one client recently asked for a wedding bouquet built of their fungi.
And while common options like enoki and maitake are available, Desert Moon also grows mushrooms unfamiliar to even knowledgeable foodies. Lion’s Mane is a forager’s favorite, while Coral Tooth is a white mushroom that looks remarkably like a coral reef.
Desert Moon is in soft-opening mode with shopping available by appointment. The mushrooms will also continue to be sold at farmers markets around the valley.

Can a Merger Between Grocery Giants Be Stopped?
Nevada is joining seven other states to block a planned merger between Kroger and Albertsons. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler has a fascinating discussion with food justice writer Kim Foster and Nevada Current editor April Corbin Girnus about the impact of “Big Grocery” and how the merger could affect both workers and customers.

Cheers 🍻
