🍜 A new and improved Chinatown?

April 19, 2024

☀️ If the forecast holds up this weekend, Vegas will crack 90 degrees for the first time in 2024. It’s a good time to remind you about the best pool deals for locals. And to not leave your dog in the car 🐶

What's CITY Talking About?

🪧 Postal Worker Protest

Postal workers are taking to the streets to protest being attacked and robbed while on the job. The local postal union wants to see greater resources for investigations and stiffer penalties for criminals found responsible. Reports of mail theft are rising throughout the valley, from Henderson to Summerlin. [KTNV]

🍜 Chinatown Revamp

Clark County is launching a redevelopment plan of Chinatown. Business owners say traffic is more of an issue and hope to see improvements like new signage, better roads, added parking, lower speed limits, pedestrian bridges, wider sidewalks, and more ways to attract tourists from the Strip. Two Chinatown stops are planned for Elon Musk’s Vegas Loop. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🍽️ Land of Confusion

There appears to be a wave of ghost kitchens with names a little too similar to popular, established restaurants like Gaetano’s, ShangHai Taste, and Esther’s Kitchen (which just expanded to a new dining room btw). The questionable businesses are popping up on delivery apps like Uber Eats and Grubhub, creating confusion in the marketplace, if not outright capitalizing on it. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

⚾ Summerlin Sports Fun

Who knew Summerlin could be such a fun sports town? Look out for cyclists on Saturday morning as the Tour de Summerlin attracts competitors, originating from the Lawn at Downtown Summerlin. Later that night, the Las Vegas Aviators will take on a throwback persona of the Las Vegas Gamblers for one game only against the Tacoma Rainiers at the Las Vegas Ballpark. Will there be Gamblers merch to buy? Of course! [KVVU]

Police Destroy Home, Political Miscalculations, and Lake Mead Vandals

Funding for the A’s stadium is so convoluted, even Nevada’s own politicians are confused. That’s just one topic discussed during today’s Friday news roundup, along with a police standoff that may have gone off the rails (even by Vegas standards) and questions about Lake Mead vandalism and the destructive nature of the Y chromosome.

🌎 In closing, congratulations to the Sphere!

Movie poster of the Sphere and Las Vegas destroyed.
At a theater near you? (“Civil War”/A24/Instagram)

You know you’ve made it when an image of your destruction symbolizes an on-screen apocalypse, even if that scene doesn’t actually appear in the movie 🎬

I’m still wondering how Caesars Palace ended up on both sides of the Strip 🤔
