👑 Does Las Vegas have a new mayor?
June 12, 2024 · Rob Kachelriess
City Cast is more than Las Vegas. We’re a nationwide network of cities and after a soft launch, we’re officially welcoming two more to the family:
🌵 City Cast Austin (and the Hey Austin newsletter)
🤠 City Cast Nashville (and the Hey Nashville newsletter)
If you know anyone in either of those cities, feel free to give ‘em a heads up. Meanwhile, we’ve got some primary election results to talk about in Vegas 👇

What's CITY Talking About?
👀 Las Vegas Will See a Runoff for Mayor
There were 14 candidates for Las Vegas Mayor, and none received more than 50% of the vote, which means the top two will square off in a runoff on November 5. The choice is between Shelley Berkley and Victoria Seaman, who both participated in Mayoral Mondays with City Cast Las Vegas. That gives you more than four months to study up on the positions of each candidate.

🗳️ November Races Takes Shape
Sam Brown defeated Jeff Guntner by a wide margin to become the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, setting up a showdown with incumbent Democrat Jacky Rosen on November 5. Meanwhile, Nevada’s incumbent congressional representatives all won their primaries with the following races taking shape for the fall election.
- District 1: Rep. Dina Titus (D) faces Mark Robertson (R)
- District 2: Rep. Mark Amodei (R) faces low-profile Independent American Party, Libertarian, and unaffiliated challengers with no Democrat
- District 3: Rep. Susie Lee (D) faces Drew Johnson (R)
- District 4: Rep. Steven Hosford (D) faces John Lee (R), who edged out David Flippo in a close primary

🏠 Is Las Vegas Running Out of Land for Homes?
The federal government owns 88% of Clark County land, prompting the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association to back a bill freeing up government territory for housing. Otherwise, the Las Vegas Valley could run out of land for new homes in as little as eight years. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
☀️ Beware: Solar Power Scams
The Nevada State Contractors Board now has an investigations unit to curb scams related to residential solar panel installations. Door-to-door sales representatives are sometimes accused of misleading customers (with the elderly often targeted) about prices, discounts, services, and long-term commitments. [Nevada Independent]

Is the Time Right for Legal Brothels in Clark County?
Nevada is the only U.S. state that allows prostitution, although Clark County is one of seven counties that has declined to participate. Is it time for the home of Sin City to live up to its reputation and approve legal brothels? City Cast Las Vegas Dayvid Figler talks to UNLV sociology professor Barb Brents about the legalities of prostitution in Las Vegas and what it would take for policies to change.

While Lake Mead continues to deal with low water levels, Lake Tahoe is “full” for the first time since 2019. What happens now? Do they pull a plug or something? 🤔
