July 17, 2024 · Rob Kachelriess
🥵 Is it hot enough for ya?
The line is more than a bad attempt at conversation. It’s a valid question for anyone who thinks visiting Death Valley is a good idea right now. At least if you go, the Furnace Creek Visitors Center is back open after a power outage 💡

🌋 It Was All Just a Mirage
The last guests have checked out and a highly-touted “cash giveaway” wrapped up yesterday. Now, the Mirage is closing for good at 11 a.m. this morning. “We rushed into a virtual doubling of the town’s capacity and became the fastest growing city in America,” founder Steve Wynn said, looking back on the property’s 1989 opening. “To call The Mirage a catalyst would be an understatement.” [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

Las Vegas Chatter
Sen. Jacky Rosen didn’t appear with President Biden today, but wasted no time going after Sen. Bob Menendez, found guilty of corruption yesterday.

On our coverage of the Trump assassination attempt
(There’s) no place for violence in America until it becomes fascist, then it’s normalized and you’ll have no say, unless it's approval to the supreme leader.
— Armand T.
This is insanity, considering the violence Trump incited on January 6th and continues to incite to this day.

On finding New York favorites in Vegas
I'm pretty sure you can buy Dr. Brown's sodas at the Steamie Weenie on Green Valley Parkway. They have stuff to drink I haven't seen in years.
— Brenda O.
(We checked. The Steamie Weenie doesn’t have Dr. Brown’s, but they do carry Northeast faves like Empire Root Beer and Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer 😋)
On Basque culture in Nevada
My Dad is Basque, coming to Chino, California in his twenties. Yes, the pickings are slim for Basque activities here (in Las Vegas). There is a Basque club and there have been cultural picnics at Red Rock Canyon with folkloric dancing and a traditional BBQ.
— Marina B.
On neighborhood planning
I am just wondering if there is any hope of preventing a project from being built when for all intents and purposes it looks like it was rubber stamped?
— Mitch A.
(We have advice on what works and what doesn’t when facing the Planning Commission.)
