What's CITY Talking About?

📚 It’s a Good News, Bad News Kinda School Year
Clark County has filled at least 94% of classroom positions ahead of Monday’s first day of school with the addition of 1,400 teachers. Guess what worked? Higher pay. [Nevada Independent]
- New security measures will be in place, including scannable IDs for entry, cellphone signal blocking pouches, and weapons detection systems for big events like football games. [KTNV]
🤖 Police Have Robocops Now
Metro Police have added robots to the force, using them to survey dangerous areas, pick up suspicious devices, communicate with suspects, and if needed, break down doors 😯 And that’s not even counting a “robot dog” that’s only been used a few times. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
💸 Big Contracts, Little Success for Tech Contractor
NZero, a tech company with little experience, lobbied for nearly $6 million in Nevada contracts to monitor carbon emissions without a competitive selection process. The co-founder admits to not delivering the real-time data promised, but claims the information provided was still valuable. [ProPublica]
🏁 F1 Speeds Ahead
Don’t put away your whites or begin work on F1 until after Labor Day 🏎️ Track lighting for the Las Vegas Grand Prix will appear on sidewalks after the holiday, followed by track barriers a few weeks later. Clark County is also introducing a sports and special events department to help minimize the frustration associated with last year’s inaugural event. [KVVU]
- Formula 1 has already cost Clark County big money. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
