🚄 What a train ride to L.A. will look like
September 10, 2024 · Rob Kachelriess
📺 It’s debate night! 🇺🇲
ABC News hosts the first (and only?) presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump at 5 p.m. Vegas time. So pour yourself a stiff drink and get ready for an evening of verbal warfare 🍸
Might as well make a game out of it. Do a shot every time “weird,” “rigged,” “Hannibal Lecter” or “no taxes on tips” is mentioned. Do two if anyone brings up Yucca Mountain ⛰️
What's CITY Talking About?
🚄 Faster Than a Freight Train
German company Siemens Mobility will begin production in 2026 on trains for the high-speed rail line between Vegas and Southern California — after a new facility is built in upstate New York. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer helped make the announcement, so it’s a big deal. New renderings of the cabins (like the one above image ☝️) were released too. [Siemens Mobility]
- The American Pioneer 220 trains will top 185 mph, powered by a gearless system that’s energy efficient and designed to handle steep inclines. Can the line be ready by the 2028 target date? 🤔 And more importantly, will it be safe? [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🔥 Apartments Full of Smoke, Full of History
A fire ripped through the Paradise Spa Apartments, which used to be a place where the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and the Rat Pack hung out. Lately, the single-story ranch-style units have attracted homeless squatters. [KLAS]
👽 Was it Aliens?
As it turns out, an unidentified flying object over Henderson really was a weather balloon. [KVVU]
🥵 Vegas is Hot … Heeelp!
The City of Las Vegas wants to plant 60,000 new trees by 2050, a move designed to have a cooling effect as concrete and asphalt contribute to an urban “heat island.” [KLAS]
- The official start of fall is less than two weeks away — and it can’t come soon enough after the record-breaking summer temperatures. City Cast Las Vegas talked to Bertha Gutierrez of the Conservation Lands Foundation about the best fall hikes in and around our community 🍂 It’s a great episode for anyone eager to get outdoors and enjoy some of the best weather of the year.
