What's CITY Talking About?
🔥 Lithium Batteries, Highway Menace
Every now and then, the news feels like a rerun. A semi-truck carrying lithium batteries crashed and caught fire on U.S. 95 near Indian Springs just weeks after the same thing happened near the California border on Interstate 15. Rep. Dina Titus has already introduced legislation to address the risk in Nevada, which is one of the world’s largest sources of lithium. [KVVU]
⚖️ Bill Cosby: Former Vegas Headliner, Current Vegas Defendant
A lawsuit by 10 more women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual assault is moving forward in Las Vegas. Last year, Nevada lifted the statute of limitations for civil claims in sexual violence cases. [Daily Mail]
🏁 Hotel Bookings Soft for F1 Weekend
Hotel rates are down for Formula One weekend compared to the period during the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix last year. It helps to have a Raiders home game at Allegiant Stadium the same weekend, but demand for the NFL in Vegas is down too 🏈 [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- Maybe the Neon City Festival will help pick up the slack? The event is announcing headliners tomorrow. [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]
The people at the bottom of the ballot affect your day-to-day more than anybody at the top of the ballot ever will.
📚 Do School Board Races Matter?
Do you draw a blank when you enter the voting booth and see the candidates for school board positions? Political advocates believe it’s more important than ever to pay attention to who’s elected to represent the Clark County School District. Between the search for a new superintendent and the fallout over the resignation of an absentee trustee, it’s been a pivotal year for the nation’s fifth-largest school district. [Nevada Independent]
- City Cast Las Vegas Dayvid Figler talks with Patricia Haddad Bennett, a former director of government relations for the Clark County School District, about why these nonpartisan positions are becoming political, what a school board actually does, and why even those without children should pay attention.
