🚨 Can tech make Vegas the safest city in America?
November 21, 2024 · Rob Kachelriess
🏁 It’s here! 🫣
Formula 1 weekend begins tonight with practice laps on the track — hopefully without any manhole covers coming loose 🏎️
If you don’t have F1 plans, avoid the Strip at all costs. The traffic frustration will take years off your life. But if you insist on visiting businesses or hotels in the area, F1 has detailed information on accessibility.
Either way, it’s the early start of a busy weekend with lots to do on and off the Strip 🎉

What's CITY Talking About?

👮 Tech Will Make Us Safer … Right?
Metro sat down for a podcast with tech investors a16z to explain how — and this is the name of the episode — Las Vegas is becoming the safest city in America 🤔 The discussion touches on the Hope for Prisoners program, community engagement, drones in real-time situations, license-plate reading cameras at intersections, and more. Next on the wishlist: AI to eliminate “tedious” work with videos and cellphone tower data. [a16z/The Ben & Marc Show]
👎 No Tax Hike to Help the Homeless
Clark County Commissioners decided against raising the sales tax (already on the high side at 8.375%) by an additional one-eighth of 1% to expand resources for those facing homelessness. [KSNV]
- Clark County, following a similar move by the City of Las Vegas, banned the sale of copper wire without proper documentation to discourage theft from air conditioners, street lights, and other utility equipment. [KVVU]
🎰 What’s In a Name?
A year after announcing the Silver Sevens would revert back to the Continental (the casino’s original name from when it opened in 1980), Affinity Gaming reversed course and decided against the idea. Not sure which is better, but at one point, the property was called Terrible’s — and we can all agree that’s a worse name than the other two 🧐 [Nevada Independent]
🥵 Regulating Summer
The summer was so hot, we’re now passing laws to do something about it. Nevada approved new rules for businesses to follow when protecting employees from our scorching desert temperatures. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🍗 The Countdown is On
We’re one week from Thanksgiving. Have you even thought about cooking yet? Don’t worry. There’s always the Bobbie. (Scroll down for more 👇) And some of the best restaurants in Vegas are putting fresh spins on turkey dinners, pumpkin pie, and other holiday staples. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Sarah Lohman talks to Samantha Gemini Stevens of Neon News about the best options for keeping your kitchen clean and enjoying a Thanksgiving meal out on the town in Las Vegas.
