December 20, 2024 · Rob Kachelriess
📣 Attention shoppers … New Year’s Eve is less than two weeks away. So make sure to scroll down for our guide to New Year’s Eve fireworks 😁
Meanwhile, I have my predictions for 2025:
- The Fashion Show mall will begin charging for parking.
- Formula 1 will announce a “pause” in Las Vegas for 2026, promising to take the year off to “listen and learn” 🙏
- “Oligarchy” will be Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year.
- Sarah Lohman will write a story for the newsletter about the History of the Christmas Cookie 😋
What did I miss? Share your predictions for 2025. We want to hear ‘em!

What's CITY Talking About?

💰 Goodbye Resort Fees (Kinda)
The FTC has a new rule that requires hotels and vacation rentals to disclose so-called “junk fees” upfront when listing prices. The idea is to eliminate surprise resort fees when making a payment after booking a room. The rule applies to live event promoters too and Ticketmaster replied by saying the company was “pleased” and had “long advocated for all-in pricing” without a hint of irony. - City Cast Las Vegas interim executive producer Layla Muhammad joins co-hosts Dayvid Figler and Sarah Lohman to discuss the new policy on hotel fees and what it means for our tourism industry. The Friday news roundup also tackles neighborhood resistance to transitional housing and the fate of Whiskey Pete’s in Primm. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🤝 Fontainebleau Agrees to Union Deal
Take notes, Virgin Hotels. It took just 18 hours for the Fontainebleau to reach an agreement with the Culinary Union to cover more than 3,000 workers. [KLAS]
👍 Nuclear-Free New Year’s
If you see a helicopter flying low and slow over the Strip on Dec. 29 and 31, don’t freak out. It’s just the military testing to see if there’s a nuclear weapon or any other suspicious radiation to worry about. [KSNV]
🚨Thief Steals Car, Screws Up Getaway
Stealing a car is a bad move. Crashing it into a police vehicle is mistake #2. [KVVU]
