😡 Joshua trees bulldozed for solar project
January 15, 2025 · Rob Kachelriess
☕ You may assume I write this newsletter at Starbucks, but I prefer to mooch WiFi at independent coffee joints instead 👍

Regardless, America’s corporate caffeine king has cracked down on laptop loitering and now requires a purchase to hang out and turn your local Starbucks into a co-working space — or even use the bathroom.
Some things never last.

What's CITY Talking About?

☀️ Joshua Trees Bulldozed for Solar Farm
Joshua trees were bulldozed outside Mesquite to clear land for an Estuary Power solar project. As you can expect, people are mad about it. There has to be room somewhere to build in the Nevada desert that doesn’t include endangered plantlife ... right? [KLAS]
- It’s not the first time Nevadans have pushed back on solar development. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🗳️ Voter Punished for Double Dipping
It happens. A Las Vegas man was sentenced to probation for voting twice in the 2020 election — once here at home, then again in Arizona. Nevada’s attorney general is currently investigating 180 attempts to vote twice in the 2024 election. [KLAS]
- Nevada’s election system is among the most secure in the nation. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
🧑🍳 Local Food Professionals Give Back
The Las Vegas culinary scene is stepping up to help those affected by wildfires in Los Angeles. Chef Jeff Henderson is leading efforts to feed incarcerated youth firefighters (a phrase that still makes my head spin), while the Gritz Cafe donates all proceeds from today’s sales to victims. The Featherblade Craft Butchery staff originally planned a California vacation today, but is remaining open to donate a portion of the day’s sales to victims and host a donation drive. [Facebook]
- There are even more ways to help. [KTNV]
😮💨 Convenient Cannabis
DoorDash will now deliver products containing THC and CBD to your door, making legal cannabis more convenient than ever — although I always appreciate the knowledge of a good budtender in person 👍 [KVVU]
- Could services like this help turn the industry around? Legal sales have dropped in Nevada over the past few years while the black market remains strong. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler talks to Riana Durrett of the UNLV Cannabis Policy Institute about the potential for legal marijuana sales to make a profit and fund education as long promised.
