🔥 The wildfire risks we face in Vegas
January 21, 2025 · Rob Kachelriess
🇺🇲 You may have noticed …
Gov. Joe Lombardo cut Jimmy Carter’s 30 days of mourning short, ordering Nevada flags to fly at full staff for President Donald Trump’s inauguration yesterday.
So what's the Vegas vibe check? How are your friends and neighbors feeling about the second Trump administration? Angry? Optimistic? Have a problem with the flag thing?
I just hope we get Greenland out of this 🇬🇱

What's CITY Talking About?

🔥 Wildfire Risk in Nevada Relatively Low
The Las Vegas Valley shares similar climate challenges with Southern California, but wildfires on the scale of what we’re seeing in Los Angeles are unlikely to happen here. There’s less greenery, active management of dry vegetation, and wider roads that keep flames at bay. [KVVU]
- The local risk is greatest in Mt. Charleston communities — a concern as the Kyle Canyon area eyes rapid development. [Nevada Public Radio]
- The L.A. wildfires could affect the cost of homes and apartments in Las Vegas. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler talks to UNLV economics professor Nicholas Irwin about what the fallout from the disaster means for local housing — and your bottom line. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

⛰️ Search for Lost Plane Ends
The wreckage of a missing plane that took off from North Las Vegas on Jan. 5 and never returned was discovered near Mount Jefferson between Tonopah and Austin. It could take weeks for crews to reach the remote area. [KSNV]
- The 64-year-old pilot was said to be upset and carrying a gun before takeoff, but “not suicidal" with “no known medical conditions” according to police. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🧳 Transitional Housing Complex Coming to Vegas
Campus of Hope, a $200 million transitional housing complex, will be built near Jones and Charleston — although some 60s era buildings will have to be bulldozed for it. Set to open in 2027, it’s modeled after a similar project in San Antonio that helped reduce homelessness in dramatic numbers. [KSNV]
🌴 MGM Grand Shakes Things Up
The MGM Grand is spending $300 million to renovate all of its rooms by the end of the year. The designs will be more “residential” with a touch of inspiration from the Disco era 🕺The resort will also debut the Palm Tree Beach Club this spring, which isn’t a seniors retreat, but a new pool party to replace Wet Republic. Do we at least get to keep our champagne showers? 🍾 [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

So about that photo … The answer is C.
Why is that wolf there? I have no idea. But Emerald Island is an incredibly locals-friendly casino, as the City Cast Las Vegas team learned during our crawl down Henderson’s historic Water Street. Some nights, guests even get free hot dogs, pizza, or doughnuts 🤯
