What's CITY Talking About?

🔥 Did a Cigarette Start Deadly Fire?

An investigation into an October house fire in the Southwest Valley ruled the cause “undetermined” — although home video caught a person lighting a cigarette outside the front door and a glow coming from the front yard afterward. Four people died, including two children. [KVVU]

🍳 Gov. Lombardo Signs Bill to Scramble Egg Prices

Nevada fast-tracked a law that says it’s okay for hens to be shoved in cages, as long as it brings down the price of eggs. [Las Vegas Sun]

  • It’s just one topic in today’s Friday News Roundup. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler and producer Layla Muhammad welcome education advocate Patricia Hadadd Bennett to discuss the news of the week, including a tax proposal to fund schools and the newest headliner at the Sphere. ☔ Hello Rain

  • I’d like to think the precipitation will help Lake Mead’s water levels, but it will probably just make my weeds grow faster. [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]

🫤 Westgate Adds Paid Parking

The home of Elvis Presley’s historic residency has a new policy that’s left us all shook up. The Westgate has given in — and now charges for parking via a phone app. $10 covers 24 hours, but the whole thing appears to operate on something of a trust system, at least for now. [Casino.org]

💕 Last-Minute Date Ideas

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend — and for those of you who forgot, don’t worry, we’re here to help.

  • A new retro-style Roller Rink opens on The Lawn at Downtown Summerlin today and will stick around through May. $20 covers 75 minutes and a skate rental.
  • Lip Smacking Foodie Tours debuts a new Celebrity Chef food crawl on the Strip, featuring casual bites from Dominique Ansel, Gordon Ramsay, Guy Fieri, and the “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro for $99 a person — a welcome price in an era of expensive Strip dining.
  • The Beverly Theater has a mystery Blind Date with a Movie at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. tonight. Or you can see “The Last Showgirl” at 4 p.m. (which held its Vegas premiere at the Beverly Theater). Tickets are $15.
  • Prefer art and entertainment on the subversive side? Recycled Propaganda is exhibiting the activist art of INDECLINE through March 29 with film screenings at 7:30 tonight and a round of Speed Activism tomorrow (6-8 p.m.) to get familiar with five local activist organizations — two minutes at a time.

What’s next at UnCommons? (UnCommons)

Ready to test your skills — again?

It’s the second week of the Hey Las Vegas news quiz. We got a great response to the inaugural edition last week … although a few of you mentioned not wanting to leave your name. Some just put in their initials. Others wrote stuff like “me” and “your mom” — so thank you for the entertainment 👍

This time around, we’re not even asking for your name. Just hop in there and start answering questions. How well did you pay attention to the news of this past week?

Find the quiz here!

Here’s a look at the first question to get you started:

What will the now-closed Sundry food hall at UnCommons be replaced by?
