May 12, 2025 · — Rob Kachelriess
🐢 Finally!
After a record-setting wait, Mojave Max emerged from a long winter sleep on Friday. That means one of our City Cast Las Vegas Neighbors won our contest to predict when the desert tortoise would appear to the world at Springs Preserve — or at least come the closest.

What's CITY Talking About?

🏜️ Nevada Public Lands Debate
Nevada is full of wide-open spaces to build new communities, movie studios, and anything else you can think of. But when that territory is sold to developers, who deserves the profit? City Cast Las Vegas looks at a new budget amendment in Congress that would hand the money over to the U.S. Treasury instead of staying here in Nevada. Did a congressman put party politics ahead of his own home state? [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
📚 Lombardo Threatens to Kill School Bill
The Nevada Legislature put together an education budget that gives well-deserved raises to public school teachers, but Gov. Lombardo is threatening to veto it. The reason: He wants raises for charter school teachers too. [KLAS]
📈 Our Population Boom Continues
A new study — by the scientific minds in the storage unit rental industry — is bullish on Nevada, naming Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Reno in the top ten of U.S. cities growing in population. [KSNV]
- Then again, another story says a third of Nevada residents have thought about leaving as the cost of living and home prices continue to rise. [Reno Gazette Journal]
🐺 Coyote Encounters On the Rise
No, you’re not imagining things. Coyotes are adapting and becoming more comfortable around people as new homes continue to push up against the animals’ natural habitat. Experts say to keep food indoors, trash covered, and to not let cats or small dogs roam free outdoors, which is like “ringing a dinner bell” for coyotes 😳 [KTNV]

Where to See Outdoor Concerts in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is known for great entertainment — and more than a few shows are taking place outdoors this year. Whether it’s by a pool or on a mountain, the following places know how to mix music and scenery together in one perfect package.
🎸 Fremont Street Experience
On any given night, you’ll see cover bands performing on multiple stages at the Fremont Street Experience. The biggest acts, however, are reserved for the Downtown Rocks concert series, which is always free with performances among the bright lights of Fremont Street casinos. This year’s lineup includes names like Jet (May 25), Buckcherry (June 7), Craig Morgan (July 4), Toad the Wet Sprocket (Aug. 30), Ugly Kid Joe (Aug. 31), Cracker (Sept. 6), and more.
⛰️ Lee Canyon
The Lee Canyon ski and snowboard resort launches a new outdoor concert series on Memorial Day weekend with The Parametrics on May 24. Dates also include Mountain Fest on June 28 and Fall Fest on Oct. 4. Enjoy a break from the hot weather with the high elevation of Mt. Charleston while watching bands at an outdoor stage on Rabbit Peak.
☀️ Durango
The Bel-Aire Backyard pool deck at Durango is hosting an outdoor concert series for the first time this summer. See acts like The Fray (May 16), Dashboard Confessional (July 12), The Struts (Sept. 12), and more.
🎷 Jazz In The Park
The Jazz in the Park series is celebrating 35 years in Las Vegas with nighttime performances by Spyro Gyra (May 17), Jonathan Butler (May 24), Kirk Whalum (May 31), and Jackiem Joyner/Jessy J (June 7). The good news? Tickets are free! The bad news? They’re all snatched up — but you can still put your name down on a waiting list. Good luck!
🎶 Virgin Hotels
Virgin Hotels is welcoming guests to Live on the Lawn concerts that take advantage of the resort’s centralized outdoor event space. See acts like Sugar Ray (May 24), Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (June 7), Goldfinger (Sept. 13), and more.
