City Cast Las Vegas
🎰 A new tax risk for gamblers
July 8, 2025 · — Rob Kachelriess
🎉 Hello!
Now that the smoke has settled from the holiday fireworks (and the Cromwell’s parking garage) we’re back with a full-length regular edition of the newsletter. Let’s dive in 😎

What's CITY Talking About?

🔥 Wildfire Simmers West of Vegas
The cause has yet to be determined for a wildfire that grew to at least 30 acres in Trout Canyon. (That’s somewhere between Mt. Charleston and Pahrump.) But things are looking up. Evacuees were allowed to return home and crews are expected to keep the flames under control over the next few days. [KLAS]
- Summer is wildfire season and Wetlands Park has seen its share this year — four to be exact. City Cast Las Vegas discusses why the nature preserve continues to be at risk and what’s being done to prevent additional fires. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🇺🇲 Fourth of July, By the Numbers
Metro Police officers were busy over the holiday weekend with 861 traffic stops, 68 DUI arrests, and more than 8,851 pounds of illegal fireworks confiscated. Las Vegas firefighters battled more than a hundred outdoor fires, including seven building fires. [KVVU]
🎰 Casino Losses At Risk for Taxation
The Big Beautiful Bill that was signed into law on July 4 had a holiday surprise for the gambling industry: an amendment that no longer allows the full deduction of casino losses on taxes. (In other words, you could break even and still face a tax penalty.) Rep. Dina Titus introduced a bill to restore full deductions. [KSNV]
💰 A Moment Like This
Despite a last-minute postponement of Kelly Clarkson’s Colosseum residency, Caesars Palace insisted on charging ticket holders the full flat “special event” parking fee while leaving the garage — even those who left just minutes after learning the news. [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]

💔 Before we go …
Our thoughts are with those affected by the flooding in Texas. Here’s a good list of where you can donate to help victims and recovery efforts.
We also want to salute one of our own, City Cast Austin executive producer Eva Ruth Moravec, who was on the ground in Kerrville, covering the tragedy for the Washington Post and sharing some reflections on an episode of the City Cast Austin and in the Hey Austin newsletter.
