What's CITY Talking About?
🥤 Line Cutting Turns Deadly at 7-Eleven
A former 7-Eleven security guard will serve up to 14 years behind bars for the deadly 2020 shooting of a customer who cut the line. The guard said she was under pressure to enforce pandemic-era safety protocols. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🚸 New School Year, New Crosswalk Light
More than two months after a student was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver (and long after parents complained about dangerous drivers in the area), a flashing pedestrian beacon is finally being installed in front of Arbor View High School. [KSNV]
🎰 Casino Tax Reversal Blocked
Senate Republicans in Washington blocked an attempt to reverse a provision in the recently passed federal budget bill that now taxes gambling losses at 90% instead of 100%, which means you might owe taxes on money you lost 💸 This signals an uphill battle for a bill by Rep. Dina Titus to reverse the tax that’s making its way through the House. [Nevada Independent]
🛌 Finding Hope for the Homeless
The Navigation Center in Downtown Las Vegas just celebrated its two-year anniversary, helping more than 1,800 people transition out of homelessness. [KVVU]
- Meanwhile, another resource, Campus for Hope, is facing an uphill battle after neighbors filed suit to oppose its construction near Charleston and Jones. City Cast Las Vegas talks to FOX5 news anchor Jaclyn Schultz about the crisis and the harsh realities of getting people off the streets. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Las Vegas Chatter
The debate rages on about a proposal to further restrict noise in the Downtown Arts District. Here’s how readers voted in our poll:

🔊 We received more feedback after our City Cast Las Vegas episode on noise in the Arts District.
The CONSTRUCTION NOISES are too loud. Music and art don’t bother me at all. If anything, they could turn it up.
— morrgyn
How about these developers use better insulation materials instead of killing DTLV’s vibe?
— Kristin R.
🏗️ And our episode on Midtown, whose developers support more noise restrictions …
Kudos to Sarah for her interview with the Midtown developers. It wasn't just a puff piece of an interview, but asked tough questions regarding gentrification of the area, and if their product will indeed be affordable and fit into the existing Arts District culture. Their answers were interesting, and often somewhat defensive.
— Mark A.
🌳 Plus, an attempt to make Vegas cooler with trees …
I can’t help but wonder why we allow houses 10 feet apart, one on top of each other, get rid of all plants, pave deserts that reflect heat with asphalt which does not, and then bitch about the increasing temperatures.
— Rick B.
🛴 And frustration over e-bikes and scooters
When will all of these electric vehicles start paying road taxes? Every day I see lots of them. The roads are getting worse!
— David T.
I like to use bike lanes for skateboarding as well. It’s one of the safer ways to get around without endangering pedestrians or getting too close to cars.
— Brian B.

Where Is It?

We’re happy to see that Paul McCartney is coming back to Las Vegas with a date at Allegiant Stadium this October. But let’s go back in time to the singer’s “Sgt. Pepper” era with the Beatles, remembered in this painting.
Where is it? We’ll give you a hint: It’s on the wall of a music venue here in Vegas.
