Refinery Fire ⏩ Gas Price Spike
That’s not a California sunset. The above photo shows a massive explosion and fire at the El Segundo refinery that supplies fuel to LAX, 20% of California, and yes … us. So expect a gas station price bump to stick around awhile. [Reuters/Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🚄 Too Big to Rail?
The cost of Brightline’s high-speed rail line between Vegas and SoCal has grown from $16 billion to more than $21 billion — and that’s before little if any track has been laid down. The project is now dependent on a new $6 billion loan from the federal government, which some of us might casually describe as fickle right now. [Newsweek]
⚓ The Bellagio Has a Yacht Now
A vintage Italian yacht is docked in the Bellagio fountains after being dropped off by crane. Rides are available to “select guests” — so probably not you or me. Then again, it’s part of the upcoming Carbone Riviera, a restaurant taking over the old Picasso space by the water. Maybe a reservation earns a ride? Or a sunset cocktail cruise before dinner? Your guess is as good as mine, but it’s no coincidence the yacht is showing up in time for F1 next month. [KSNV]
💰 How Did the ‘Biggest Sale in Vegas History’ Do?
Web traffic to the Visit Las Vegas website (effectively the landing page for the hyped-up five-day resort sale) increased by four times the weekly average — although I think at least half of that was me prepping for my appearance on City Cast Las Vegas to talk about it. The LVCVA also says the campaign generated nearly eight times more “booking interest” than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. But is that same as, you know, “booking” 🤔 [KVVU]
⛰️ Latter-day Saints in Las Vegas
Despite neighborhood opposition, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently broke ground on a new temple in the quiet Lone Mountain neighborhood, serving more than 100,000 members in the Las Vegas community. City Cast Las Vegas looks at the history and influence of the Mormon community in Southern Nevada and its role in shaping laws and culture. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
