🎃 Why Nevada Day is on Halloween
October 28, 2025 · — Rob Kachelriess
👋 Hey!
It’s just two more days until Halloween — and my decorations are in a losing battle against the Vegas wind 🙁 Fortunately, the weather is looking better this weekend — and we have a poll on the scariest thing in Las Vegas to get you in the spirit 👻 Vote now!

What's CITY Talking About
🛒 SNAP Reaches Breaking Point
The Department of Agriculture says SNAP benefits will run out on Nov. 1, insisting “the well has run dry” as the federal government shutdown continues. Nevada lawmakers are stepping in, sending $8 million to food banks to help people in need. [Associated Press/Nevada Independent]
- Gov. Joe Lombardo said last week that using state money to fund SNAP wasn’t a viable solution. [KVVU]
- Three Square Food Bank has widespread resources to feed locals, including walk-in food pantries, meals for seniors at local libraries, and a produce giveaway tomorrow in North Las Vegas. [threesquare.org]
💰 Land Sold Under Historic Casino
Most casino companies don’t own the land their properties operate on, especially on the Strip. Developer Derek Stevens is bucking the trend on Fremont Street, spending $19 million to buy the land underneath the Golden Gate, which is the oldest operating casino in Vegas — and once had the awful name Sal Sagev (Las Vegas spelled backwards). [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🚨 Illegal Brothel Busted in Chinatown
Police say a high-level poker player was arrested for running an illegal brothel inside a home near Decatur and Desert Inn. During the investigation, an undercover officer was offered a massage and sex for $200. So far, that’s a guilty verdict on great prices 👍 [KLAS]
💀 Is Las Vegas Getting a ‘Death Train?’
Infrastructure work is underway on Brightline’s high-speed rail station in Las Vegas, but the company’s other route between Miami and Orlando has been nicknamed the “death train” or “Frightline” by Florida locals. On average, one person is hit and killed by the train every 13 days, far outpacing rail lines in other parts of the country. [The Atlantic]
- You were hoping that headline had something to do with Halloween attractions, weren’t you? [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]
🌱 The Clock is Ticking On Ornamental Grass
Believe it or not, 2026 will be here soon, along with a deadline to get rid of “non-functional turf.” City Cast Las Vegas explains the new rules against so-called useless grass, who’s affected, and the rebates in place before time runs out. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
