👻 I see dead people at these casinos
October 29, 2025 · — Rob Kachelriess
👋 Hi …
I want to thank everyone who wrote in and pointed out the typo in yesterday’s newsletter. We apologize and updated the online version of the Nevada Day story.
No, Nevada didn’t join the Union in 1964, but here are a few things did happen that year:
- 🗳️ Lyndon Johnson won the presidential election and claimed Nevada’s electoral votes
- 🎰 Jerry’s Nugget opened in North Las Vegas
- 🎸 The Beatles played two shows at the Las Vegas Convention Center
- 🍼 U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto was born in Las Vegas
- 💯 A centennial medal, cowboy boots, Colt Peacemaker .22 Revolver, and Levi Strauss Western wear were issued to celebrate 100 years of Nevada statehood
Pretty cool, right? Let’s now shift focus to today’s headlines …

What's CITY Talking About
🧨 Roads Closed to Goodsprings
An emergency evacuation and shelter-in-place order was issued for Goodsprings — including all 216 residents — due to a suspicious item that turned out to be old dynamite. #pioneerlife [KVVU]
- Whatever you do, don’t blow up the Pioneer Saloon 🙏 🥃 [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]
🚘 A Story With a Swerve
The director of a Clark County criminal justice committee involved with DUI cases was arrested and charged with — you guessed it — driving under the influence. Fun facts from the police report: Tito’s was the vodka of choice and the car was seen swerving off the road at least five times. [KLAS]
🌎 Driverless Shuttles to the Sphere
Las Vegas is a hub for autonomous vehicles, including Zoox, which is giving out free rides on a trial basis, but will probably start charging by the time service to the Sphere begins next year. [KSNV]
🎰 More Airports With Slot Machines?
Right now, Nevada has the only two airports in the country with slot machines, but that could change if Chicago gets its way. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🇯🇲 My heart aches for Jamaica, a beautiful country that my wife and I visited a few years ago. If you can, please support the nonprofits helping in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
I’m also a big fan of Bob Marley: Hope Road at Mandalay Bay — a Strip show that gets it right under the guidance of the music icon’s family. The cast was recruited directly from Jamaica and our thoughts are with everyone involved right now.
