🚨 Is ICE changing tactics in Las Vegas?
January 26, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess
😎 Happy Monday!
Nevada was built on mining, gambling, and a hefty dose of nepotism 💪 With that in mind, City Cast Las Vegas looks back on the political dynasties that helped shape modern Las Vegas. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

What's CITY Talking About
🏈 How Can the Raiders Mess This Up?
The downside of being the top prospect in the NFL draft? You’re getting picked by the worst team, which happens to be the Raiders. That doesn’t seem to bother Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who led the Indiana Hoosiers to the national championship and is officially declared for the 2026 draft. “The Raiders have a great culture, a great coaching staff, a great ownership group,” the quarterback said when asked about the possibility of playing for Vegas. “I’d be happy to end up anywhere.” He’s learning. 🚴 E-Bike Injuries Are Adding Up
Sunrise Hospital alone saw 27 patients at its trauma center for crashes involving e-bikes and e-scooters between the first of the year and January 21. My business is words, not math, but that looks to be more than one serious injury a day. [KVVU]
🐺 Coyotes Are Hunting Your Doggies
A video shared on the NextDoor app shows a coyote hopping a Summerlin fence and snatching a little dog in its jaws — and I’m only sharing the link since the pup escaped unharmed. Consider this a reminder to always keep an eye on your pets outdoors. [KLAS]
🌎 Finally! A Field Trip to the Sphere 👍
Ever since the place opened, I’ve said the Sphere should host field trips to earn a little love and goodwill in the local community. So I’m happy to see the high-tech venue invited more than 4,000 students to see “The Wizard of Oz,” locking down a core childhood memory — and maybe some future dollars when those spectators grow up and bring kids of their own 💰 [KSNV]

Today's Big Picture

🚨 Is the Presence of ICE Growing in Las Vegas?
LV Defensa, a volunteer group that tracks the local activity of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, says calls are coming in daily from all corners of the valley. ICE raids are more high-profile in cities like Minneapolis and Portland, but operate more quickly and quietly in Southern Nevada. [KLAS]
ICE is fast. They have kind of changed their tactics to where they are much faster, so that it’s harder for people to come and record illegal activity or alert others.
- A Republican Party spokesperson says groups like LV Defensa unfairly “demonize” law enforcement. As covered in last week’s Friday news roundup, Nevada’s two Democratic U.S. senators are trying to find common ground — not “defunding” ICE, but proposing to shift some of the agency’s funding to local law enforcement instead. [Nevada Current]
- Sen. Jacky Rosen says ICE is moving too fast, citing the recent deportation of a Guatemalan who was facing charges in a deadly Las Vegas crash. She says it’s not about rights for the suspect, but justice for a woman who died. [KLAS]
If somebody has broken the law, they should be adjudicated here and not be deported. ICE is out of control.
- Local detainees are held at either the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump or the Henderson Detention Center. As ICE agents operate with "absolute immunity” (or maybe not) in other parts of the country, Henderson residents voiced both support and opposition to local detainments during a City Hall meeting last week. [KSNV]
- An asylum seeker from Turkey, whose application was denied, has been held at the Henderson Detention Center for more than 100 days. Despite a high-risk pregnancy, the woman claims she is only receiving minimal health care and no prenatal assistance. [Nevada Independent]
- Sen. Rosen is also calling for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after the deadly shooting of a second protester in Minneapolis over the weekend. [Associated Press]
- Hundreds protested on Fremont Street and in Boca Park in response to aggressive federal activity in Minnesota. [KTNV]

Where Is It?

This old wood structure looks like the perfect thing for drilling oil — or maybe water. Where is it?
