City Cast Las Vegas
🌵 The weird drive between Vegas and Reno
January 29, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess
🌤️ Good morning …
And good luck to the hundreds of volunteers counting the number of homeless people in Southern Nevada today — a task that isn’t easy, but will help determine the funds our community receives to address the problem 🙏

What's CITY Talking About
🎤 Lombardo Breaks the ICE Silence
After noting his silence in yesterday’s newsletter, we now see Gov. Lombardo is speaking out on the ongoing ICE crackdowns in Minneapolis — and his statement is about as balanced and carefully worded as you might expect. [KTNV]
- ICE continues to operate in Southern Nevada, although in a relatively quiet manner compared to other parts of the country. So far, there have been no reports of immigration enforcement on Clark County school grounds, but some people have been detained after picking up or dropping off children for classes. [Nevada Current]
- City Cast Las Vegas discusses the rights we have as Nevadans when questioned or confronted by border enforcement officials. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🚘 But Here’s a Crackdown We Can Agree On …
About 26,000 complaints have been filed after the Nevada DMV launched a program in October to report cars with expired, unregistered, or flat-out missing tags and license plates. [KVVU]
- You can snitch on fellow drivers for smog violations too 💨 [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]
🚧 The Vegas Loop Heads Downtown
But just barely. The City of Las Vegas approved a permit for a Vegas Loop station near The Strat, which is technically Downtown, though most of us consider it the end of the Strip. [KSNV]
- Let’s see if they can build it without any environmental violations 👍 [Hey Las Vegas ✍️]
🛍️ Galleria Mall Changes Name
The Galleria at Sunset has a new name: Mershops (which sounds like me saying “my shops” after a few too many Manhattans 🥃). Actually, the full, official name is Mershops Galleria at Sunset, reflecting new ownership under the Mersho family of investors and a “property-wide transformation” for the Henderson mall, which opened 30 years ago. [KLAS]
