City Cast Las Vegas
⚡ The Hoover Dam’s new problem
February 6, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess
🗞️ Hey everyone,
I’m especially proud to be a part of City Cast right now.
After the Washington Post gutted its newsroom, our CEO David Plotz immediately committed to expanding our operation at City Cast DC and hiring four journalists to cover local beats in the nation’s capital.
We talk more about it, plus the latest Las Vegas news, on today’s podcast 💪

What's CITY Talking About

🧪 Military Expertise Utilized in Biolab Investigation
The hazmat team that cleared a Sunrise Manor home suspected of operating as an illegal biolab was part of a National Guard unit in Carson City. The service members were brought in three days before the raid, which involved both the FBI and Metro. [KTNV]
- I’ve been following this story all week, so I joined the latest episode of City Cast Las Vegas to break down the details of what was found inside the home and who tipped off authorities. It’s all part of the latest Friday news roundup, which also includes Nevada’s ban on Polymarket “betting” ahead of the Super Bowl and a woman who’s running the entire length of the Colorado River. 💣 Site of Infamous Mob Bombing Sold
A corner lot east of the Strip on Sixth and Sahara is quiet now, but has the notoriety of being the place where mobster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal survived a car bombing. It was sold and the new owners vow to restore the location as a “strong neighborhood center” for business. So … Walgreens? [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- The scene in the movie “Casino” that recreated the bombing was filmed at Main St. Station. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]
💰 Teachers Feel the Squeeze of Budget Cuts
School enrollment is down in Clark County, leading to a budget shortfall of nearly $50 million across nearly 300 schools. That’s causing teachers with less seniority to be “surplussed” — or cut with the chance to work at another school that has an opening available. [KSNV]
💧 Good News, Bad News for Lake Mead
After an 18-month cleanup project, the Government Wash at Lake Mead reopens to the public tomorrow. [KLAS]
- The Colorado River is warmer than usual — and warmer water is more expensive and difficult to process at the Hoover Dam’s hydropower production plant. [Nevada Current]
