Today's Big Picture

🚘 Boring Company Support Divided on Political Lines
Elon Musk’s Boring Company, the force behind the Vegas Loop, is preparing to drill a nine-mile Music City Loop underneath Nashville. The project is facing growing cynicism and opposition from local city politicians, who tend to be Democrats — including the mayor, who said it would be ideal if “no one dies” — while support is driven by Republicans who dominate Tennessee politics on a statewide level. [Bloomberg]
- The politics mirror those in Nevada, where Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Dina Titus, have growing questions about Boring Company oversight and want Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo to take a tougher and more transparent role in challenging the practices and patterns of the underground transportation system. [Associated Press]
- Musk is combining the SpaceX rocket company and artificial intelligence startup xAI (which already includes social media network X), in what’s expected to be one of the largest IPO launches in history. [CNBC]
- The Boring Company is not part of the IPO, but could be folded in down the line, especially if Musk accomplishes his goal of drilling tunnels and building habitats underneath the surface of Mars. [The Tennessean]
- By remaining private, the Boring Company avoids the transparency and scrutiny of a publicly traded company. [Fortune]
- Our own collaboration with ProPublica revealed the Vegas Loop was drilling with limited oversight and is accused of hundreds of environmental violations. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]
- Dayvid Figler, who co-authorized those two investigative pieces, is back on today’s episode of City Cast Las Vegas with journalist April Corbin Girnus to discuss the growing demand for accountability in the construction of the Vegas Loop. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
