🎰 Neighborhood Casinos Thrive As the Strip Stagnates

Strip gaming revenue was flat last year, while Southern Nevada generated more than $1 billion for Boyd Gaming and nearly $2 billion for Red Rock Resorts (Station Casinos), which generally operate outside the tourist corridor. [Nevada Independent]

  • Sunset Station in Henderson is undergoing an $87 million renovation that includes a new bingo room, high-end steakhouse, and high-limit room for table games. [KSNV]
  • Durango is just two years old, but is already launching a $385 million expansion, featuring a bowling alley, movie theater, and new restaurants, including country bar Moonshine Flats. [KLAS]
  • Cadence Crossing is on pace to open next month next to Joker’s Wild, which will be torn down. [KSNV]
  • Eastside Cannery, another Henderson casino, is being demolished after closing during the pandemic, clearing some dead weight for Boyd Gaming.
  • Circus Circus, which is probably the closest thing to a “locals casino” on the Strip, opens a new old-school bingo room on Friday. And yes, parking is still free 👍 [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]

What's CITY Talking About

🚨 Driver Vows "I Will Shoot" State Trooper

According to an arrest report, a woman accused of driving under the influence made her situation worse by:

  • Having a dog inside the car
  • Running a red light
  • Nearly causing a crash
  • Pointing a gun at a state trooper who pulled her over

The trooper fired first and the driver was injured by broken glass before being taken into custody. [KLAS]

💊 Rhino Tranq Charges Into Vegas

Here’s another reason to stay away from drugs — at least the illegal ones. A powerful and potentially deadly animal sedative is being mixed in with fentanyl and other street narcotics. It’s called medetomidine — but regulars know it better as “rhino tranq” 😳 [KSNV]

📚 The Math Doesn’t Add Up

More than 1,200 Clark County School District employees are considered “surplus” for the upcoming year. Technically, they’re not “cut” but qualify for a transfer elsewhere. The only problem: the district has less than 600 vacant positions. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🚰 The Math Doesn’t Add Up (Part II)

A woman who doesn’t own a pool or even a bathtub saw her water bill jump from around $40 to more than $666. Nobody can figure out why she was billed for the equivalent of 53,000 gallons in two weeks, since the pipes and meters seem to operate just fine. The Water District is working on a resolution.
