☀️ Why the heat is different this time

March 18, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess

🏖️ Hey …

Back in college, I spent spring break on the beach.

Kids now spend it at the airport 🫤

Today's Big Picture

🥵 Las Vegas Skips Spring, Goes Straight to Summer

We’re inching into the ‘90s and might even hit triple digits by the end of the week. For reference, Las Vegas has never hit 100 in March — or even April. The earliest 100-degree day on local record is May 1, 1947. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • Check on your neighbors, especially those on the older side. More than 260 people in Clark County died from heat-related causes in 2025. The average age of those deaths was 57 years old. [KSNV]
  • Our weather is part of a greater heat dome that affects 70 million people, mostly in the Southwest, but as far north as Billings, Montana. [AccuWeather]
  • An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect, prompting Clark County to roll out cooling stations throughout the valley. [KVVU]
  • That’s just the beginning of the conversation. I joined City Cast Las Vegas to talk about how the heat really is different this year. It affects everything, from the water supply to NASCAR. (Really!) [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

What's CITY Talking About

🚴 E-Bikers: Use Your Brain, Don’t Injure It

The trauma center at Sunrise Hospital treated 254 patients with serious e-bike or scooter injuries last year. It’s not even April yet, and the same hospital unit has already seen more than half that number in 2026. Nearly 80% of patients weren’t wearing a helmet, increasing the risk of brain trauma. [KVVU]

💉 UNLV Takes a Stab at Vaccine Improvements

Here’s the story on vaccinations in Nevada: Our state is among the lowest in the nation for getting kids vaccinated on time. We also have the highest rates of non-medical exemptions. With that in mind, UNLV has formed NVax, a new coalition to host and support clinics, back-to-school fairs, and other resources to improve vaccination rates. [KLAS]

🧳 Final Weekend for Cromwell Hotel Rooms

The clock is ticking to book a staycation at The Cromwell. This Sunday, March 22, is the last date rooms are available before the resort gets a makeover and transforms into the Vanderpump Hotel. The casino, lobby bars, and Giada restaurant will continue to operate as usual — for now. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🔮 Unconfirmed Rumours

Yes, I wrote “rumours” Fleetwood Mac style 😉

  • Pink is in negotiations for a residency at the Sphere [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
  • The leading name for a Vegas NBA team is the Scorpions 🦂 #DunkYouLikeAHurricane [KSNV]
  • If Tilman Fertitta buys Caesars Entertainment, the billionaire could sell off parts of the company, believing they’re worth more separately than together as one entity. [Vital Vegas]

What To Do

🍺 Time to face the day … and nurse your hangover.

It’s estimated that 13 million pints of Guinness were consumed in the United States on St. Patrick’s Day.

I’m guessing about 10 million of those were in Vegas.
