What's CITY Talking About

🚔 Suspect Keeps Getting Arrested, Blows Off Court

Joshua Sanchez-Lopez failed to appear in court after he was arrested for the 36th time. The latest case involves suspicion of mailbox tampering and comes after he was released on bail with electronic ankle bracelet monitoring. His resume also includes manslaughter, grand larceny, meth, waving a gun at an officer, various forms of fraud, and other allegations. [KLAS]

  • Whether the suspect should be in jail or electronically monitored has been the subject of a back-and-forth disagreement between Sheriff Kevin McMahill and Justice of the Peace Eric Goodman, adding fuel to a fire already simmering before the Nevada Supreme Court. City Cast Las Vegas presents both sides of the debate during the latest Friday news roundup, which also includes talk about a possible NBA team in Vegas and the right to own a camel as a pet in Henderson. 💸 Lt. Governor Slapped with Ethics Violation

Lt. Gov. Stavros Anthony made a mistake in blurring the lines between government work and personal interests. That’s according to the Nevada Commission on Ethics, which fined the Republican for using his office staff and official social media accounts to promote a task force committed to keeping transgender athletes out of women’s sports. 🔥 Is Downtown Dangerously Hot?

The area represented by the 89101 zip code has the most heat-related deaths, followed by 89104. That’s based on numbers from the summer of 2024, the hottest on record in Las Vegas. Those zip codes cover Downtown, which has a high population of unhoused people spending time outdoors. [KTNV]

🏀 King James Shoots Down Role in Vegas

LeBron James won’t be taking his talents to Sin City. The NBA megastar says he’s “not at all” interested in having an ownership stake in a Vegas basketball team — an idea that could become reality with a league board of governors vote next week. James’ previous stance: "I want a team in Vegas.” [ESPN]
