💧 Historic lows for Lake Mead?

April 27, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess

☀️ Welcome back!

We had a great time at our latest City Cast Las Vegas Neighbors event on Saturday. The afternoon included a scavenger hunt at Fergusons Downtown and a cocktail/mocktail class at F The Bar 🍹

A few lucky Neighbors even won TEDxLasVegas tickets 👀

Thanks to Fergusons Downtown for hosting us — and to all the members who joined us!

What's CITY Talking About

💧 Lake Mead Braces for Historic Lows

The federal government is gearing up for a balancing act of water sharing based on the following steps:

  • Reduce the water in Wyoming’s Flaming Gorge.
  • Increase the water in Lake Powell to keep the hydroelectric operation alive on the border of Arizona and Utah.
  • Decrease the flow to Lake Mead near Las Vegas, which could dwindle past the record lows of 2022. [Nevada Independent/Associated Press]
“ It probably means the lowest water levels since the Hoover Dam was built and Lake Mead was originally filled … about five feet lower than when they were finding bodies in barrels.”
John Entsminger, General Manager, Southern Nevada Water Authority & Las Vegas Valley Water District

City Cast Las Vegas has more to discuss about the state of the water supply at Lake Mead and how the new plan makes a bad situation even worse for Southern Nevada.

✈️ Gad-Zoox! Driverless Taxis at the Airport

Zoox robotaxis are testing out rides to and from Harry Reid International Airport. Don’t get too excited — just yet. For now, employees are the only passengers allowed before the general public is invited. [KVVU]

  • Meanwhile, you can book trips with Zoox on and around the Strip during a free testing period. We stepped inside one of the autonomous vehicles to see what it’s really like. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]

👍 Raiders Will Try Winning This Year

Now that the Raiders have locked down No. 1 draft pick Fernando Mendoza, the team is looking ahead to the quarterback’s first practices over the summer. General Manager John Spytek says the Raiders never entertained the idea of trading away the pick. [Raiders.com]

🕊️ Las Vegans Remembered

Ruby Duncan has died at the age of 93. The civil rights activist helped bring a library to the Historic Westside and had a North Las Vegas elementary school named after her. Her organization, Operation Life, was famous for "storming Caesars Palace" on the Strip to protest welfare cuts in the 1970s. [KSNV]

  • Neil Sackmary passed away at the too-young age of 52. The Nevada Coin Mart founder was known for his wacky (to say the least) promotional appearances on Channel 13’s “Morning Blend.” The funeral was Friday. [KTNV]

🙏 Our thoughts are with photographer Sam Morris, who’s in critical condition after a hit-and-run crash while riding his bicycle late last week.

I’ve never met Sam personally, but I’ve used his photos in more stories over the years than I can count. Let’s hope for a full and speedy recovery.
