What's CITY Talking About

👊 Wrestling Fans Are the Real Villains

WrestleMania wrapped up more than a week ago, but the internet continues to rage over fans not respecting boundaries in Las Vegas. Social media accounts have been posting one example after another of fans aggressively asking for photos, shooting videos, and loitering in hotel lobbies, especially at the MGM Grand, where performers were staying. MGM Resorts is now defending its working relationship with WWE security. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • Could this tarnish Vegas’s reputation for effectively and efficiently hosting big events? City Cast Las Vegas lays the smack down on these WrestleMania woes in the Tuesday news roundup, while also discussing Mayor Berkley’s trashing of California cities and the onslaught of K-pop fans heading our way next month. 🚨 Nevada Senator Near D.C. Gunfire

Sen. Jacky Rosen was in attendance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, when shots were fired and a suspect was arrested outside the event. The Nevada Democrat says she was grateful for the Secret Service and law enforcement while stating “this kind of threat and violence cannot be our new normal.” [KTNV]

  • The suspect was a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the violence erupted, drawing questions about security more than eight years after a gunman committed a mass shooting in Las Vegas from a Mandalay Bay hotel room, prompting major hotels to tighten security and privacy protocols. 📚 School Turns Back the Clock on Start Times

The Clark County School District’s plan to delay start times this fall isn’t sitting well with some parents, especially those who drop off their kids before work. At least one school, Booker Elementary, is reverting back to the original bell times in response to a petition. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • Some local schools are participating in a pilot program that uses a version of Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot to guide students through lessons. [KTNV]

🎶 Mandalay Bay Trades One Room for Another

The Foundation Room, which has sat atop Mandalay Bay for more than 27 years, is no more. The space is transforming into the Vinyl Room, leaning into the nostalgia of retro vibes and spinning records. We’ll miss the Foundation Room, but to be honest — we didn’t even notice it closed in September for renovations. [Casinos.com]

  • Dig It Coffee, which employed people with disabilities, shut its doors in the Arts District, blaming in part — you guessed it — the effects of rising parking rates. [KVVU]

Las Vegas Chatter

We always appreciate reader feedback, including thoughts on Campus of Hope, a resource for the unhoused, which is drawing skepticism from those in the area of Charleston and Jones.

As a liberal single woman who lives within walking distance from this facility, I resent our concerns being referred to as “NIMBY” … I certainly understand the need for facilities such as this, but I do wonder about the appropriateness of the location. This is a neighborhood, and a fairly marginalized one at that … I notice our elected officials aren’t putting 900 homeless people and a prison for the mentally ill in their neighborhood. I think we deserve a say and some real promises from the people behind this that our neighborhoods aren’t going to end up looking like the area off Main near Catholic Charities. Drive by there sometime and tell me honestly if you want that in your backyard?

— Liz B.

We also received feedback on all those broken escalators at pedestrian bridges.

I've written Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and others about broken escalators and elevators on the Strip. I was near the Miracle Mile Shops and watched a family lift an elderly woman out of the wheelchair and carry her up the stairs. As a Vegas resident since 2007, I was disgusted, embarrassed, and ashamed of the city that I love and call home.

— Alisa F.

I was in China over the holidays and the escalators there are majestic. If one stopped working for just a few minutes, heads would roll. Not literally (I hope) but the brokenness of infrastructure and our willingness to accept it are very American.

— Jim R.

Another reader also let us know that one of the “hidden” coffeehouses we featured last week, Palm Sugar inside Poppy Collective, closed a few days after our story ran. We’re sad to see it go. The owners say it may reopen in another location.
