🤢 Cyclosporiasis comes to Clark County
July 21, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess
☕ The American Heart Association says five cups of coffee a day is fine for most adults — which is great news for me.
‘Cause otherwise, this newsletter isn’t getting done.

Joe Lombardo, Trump Whisperer?
ICE raids in Nevada aren’t as frequent — or visible — as those in other states. You can thank Joe Lombardo for that — at least according to the governor himself, who credits the benefits of having President Trump’s ear. [Nevada Independent]
If I didn't have a relationship with Donald Trump, ICE would be walking down Las Vegas Boulevard.
The words were spoken at a closed-door veterans event on July 2, less than two weeks before ICE attempted to arrest a Vietnamese-born man (who’s actually an Australian citizen) at Harry Reid International Airport. The plain-clothed agents gave up after drawing a crowd, leaving a handcuff hanging on the wrist of Phu Nguyen, who got it removed before boarding a flight to Los Angeles. The 57-year-old was arrested upon landing and taken to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center near Victorville. [CNN]
Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) commented on a video of the incident, calling it an example of ICE “continuing to act with impunity … which hurts our tourism economy.” [@SenJackyRosen/X]
City Cast Las Vegas weighed in on the abandoned ICE arrest in today’s news roundup, which also includes the latest on a delayed nomination hearing for Nevada's U.S. attorney and rising apartment rates in Las Vegas. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

What's CITY Talking About
🚨 Yes, That Was Gunfire You Heard in North Las Vegas
Police arrested a man accused of randomly firing an AR-15 rifle near homes in a North Las Vegas neighborhood. The suspect, who was seen on video knocking on doors, died after being taken into custody. The cause wasn’t announced, but is unrelated to police actions during the arrest. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
🥬 Parasite Travels to Nevada
A case of cyclosporiasis was identified in Clark County and is under investigation for possible ties to a multistate outbreak that involves Taco Bell. The person is believed to have contracted the parasite while traveling — so as far as we know, the lettuce in Nevada is still good 🤞 [KSNV]
🔥 Driverless Car Needs a Smoke Detector
Despite heavy smoke, a Zoox autonomous shuttle continued driving through an active fire emergency in Las Vegas, prompting the company to issue a “voluntary software recall” 🤔 If there’s no driver, who does the volunteering? [KVVU]
🚧 Temple Makes Progress (and Noise)
The new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lone Mountain is beginning to take shape. Neighbors who fought against it for intruding on their quiet, rural lifestyle are already complaining about the construction noise. [KLAS]
🍦 Circa Gets a Sweet Hotel Suite
Circa is teaming up with the newly opened Museum of Ice Cream for a themed hotel suite, specialty cocktails, and other fun stuff to be announced. [Neon/Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- The Museum of Ice Cream is already making an impression at AREA15 — but it’s not really a museum. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]

To Preserve or Renovate. That is the Question!
The Debate & Framework After a decade of identical gray-and-white flips, buyers now seek homes with original character. The key question: what's irreplaceable versus what's just outdated? Systems, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, always get updated. Character-defining features like terrazzo, breeze block, and built-ins deserve restoration. If you can't buy it new today, protect it; if it's just outdated function, upgrade it. When full restoration isn't feasible, a "preserve-and-blend" approach keeps the bones while modernizing function.
Details & Payoff Mid-century details, such as breeze block, terrazzo, exposed beams, original kitchens, and desert landscaping, weren't decoration. They were climate-smart design choices worth preserving. Resale-wise, thoughtfully restored homes can outperform gutted ones by standing out from generic flips. The key is matching value: swap a high-value finish for another high-value finish, and worth rises; swap for something cheap, even if new, and you devalue the home. Palm Springs proves preservation can lift an entire market's values.
