School is Back. Here Are The Updates

Times Have Changed

In more ways than one. But starting Aug. 10, the literal new times will be:

  • Elementary Schools will start at 9:15 a.m.
  • Middle Schools at 7:30 a.m.
  • High Schools at 8:30 a.m.

While this may be tough for some families juggling multiple children and drop-off times, CCSD Superintendent Jhone Ebert says research and 48,000 survey responses helped make the changes. [KTNV]

More Crossing Guards

Bonanza, Centennial, Desert Pines, Shadow Ridge and Western high schools will welcome crossing guards next week after parent advocacy groups pushed for better traffic safety. The district hopes to reduce the number of students hit by cars from 427 last year. [KTNV]

College (admission) for All

UNLV and College of Southern Nevada will be offering guaranteed admissions for seniors from Clark County School District for the first time. All students need to have is either a 3.0 GPA, a 22 ACT score, or a college and career ready diploma for admission. If your grades don't quite cut it, there's still a chance to get in by taking credits as a "non-degree seeking student" at CSN and transferring to UNLV. [Las Vegas Review Journal]

A New Master Plan

Even though Clark County's enrollment is down, new schools might get built. As more families choose to live around the outer ring, the CCSD is considering schools to better accommodate them. It's expected to be part of the district's new master plan. [KLAS]

🏗️ Data Centers Don't Always Own the Land They Want To Develop

It’s not just Boulder City! The Monarch Data Center, a proposed 505 acre facility in Lyon county estimated to consume the equivalent of half the Hoover Dam's total output, is nearing a key vote over – you guessed it – a key zoning change. Needless to say neighbors are upset, and the developers don't want to take any chances. [Nevada Independent]

💸 Gov. Lombardo Doesn't Want to Take Blame for Affordability

At a meet and greet last month, Gov. Joe Lombardo lumped affordability with inflation as federal issues, saying, "I can't control that." It’s a marked change from the 2022 version of Lombardo, who readily tied then-Gov. Steve Sisolak to rising inflation. [Nevada Current]

🏐 Professional Volleyball is Back!

The Las Vegas Thrill – yes, that's our professional volleyball team's name – is coming back in 2027. Besides the thrill excitement of local games, the team says it will be hosting workshops to train the next generation of players. [KTNV]

🫠 Extreme Heat Continues

The extreme weather warning is set to continue through Saturday meaning you can expect temperatures to stay above 110 until then. While it may be easy to shrug off with AC, heat is serious business and it can be fatal. Experts say staying hydrated and in the shade is essential. [KLAS; NV.gov]
