🏛️ 60 weird years at Caesars Palace

August 6, 2026 · — Rob Kachelriess

🍷 Hi. It’s Rob! I’m back and excited for a big event this weekend.

Our friends at Crush Pad Wine Bar are throwing a fundraiser for the Las Vegas Men's Chorus Saturday night with sips of more than 35 wines, charcuterie, and live music.

It’s a great cause — and great wine 👀 (Trust me, I love their stuff.) Reserve your tickets online.

What's CITY Talking About

🚨 Metro Mourns Fallen Officer

The Las Vegas community is grieving the loss of Officer Austin Abdelnabi, who Sheriff Kevin McMahill says was “ambushed” by a gunman acting erratically near Tropicana and Mountain Vista. An officer returned fire, killing the suspect. Abdelnabi, a decorated Marine Corps veteran, was on the force less than three years. [KTNV]

✈️ Trump Holds Vegas Rally

President Trump brought the all new, totally (maybe, possibly) maxxxed-out Air Force One to Las Vegas for the first time and hit the campaign trail to Summerlin. The prez addressed supporters at Red Rock Resort to talk tax policy and stump for Nevada GOP candidates ahead of the midterms. And Mike Tyson showed up too. [KSNV]

  • Vegas hospitality workers appreciate the president’s “No Tax on Tips” deduction (at least on the first $25,000 of income), but say it doesn’t offset the loss in wages due to a tourism slump blamed on other policies like tariffs (👉 inflation) and the Iran War (👉 high gas prices). [ABC News]
  • Should Trump give a speech about aliens instead? 👽 [KLAS]

🗳️ Campaign Momentum for Lombardo?

Three new polls show Gov. Joe Lombardo pulling ahead in his quest for reelection against Attorney General Aaron Ford. Those numbers may come with an asterisk, however 🧐 All three were financed by the GOP, and at least one of those pollsters published results that were wildly off in 2024. (How off? “Kamala wins Nevada” off.) [Nevada Independent]

  • And yes, Lombardo showed up at the Trump rally after skipping the president’s last Vegas appearance in April. (It got awkward.) After giving his own address, Lombardo was coaxed back on stage and defended Trump's "billionaire friends" for creating jobs. [KSNV]
  • City Cast Las Vegas looks at how Lombardo's recent comments on affordability could have an impact on the governor’s race in the latest news roundup. The team also discusses a potential shift in Airbnb laws and the growing pains associated with Chinatown. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

😶‍🌫️ High Time for UNLV Studies

My college roommate claimed he was pursuing a “PhD in smoking weed” — and now stoner jokes are beginning to merge with reality. UNLV has a new Cannabis Policy Institute certificate program in response to an evolving industry with more than 11,000 jobs in Nevada. [KSNV]

What To Do

Thursday, Aug. 6

Friday, Aug. 7

🫠 It’s too hot to work right now. So we made up a new holiday … Summer Friday.

The City Cast team is taking tomorrow off to rest and recharge. You'll get something special in your inbox tomorrow, but the regular newsletter and podcast will return on Monday.

In the meantime, be careful out there. If the Taco Bell lettuce doesn’t get you, the jalapeños at Chipotle will 🤢
